Manual Therapy

What?

Manual therapy is a specialised form of physiotherapy that focuses on treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including issues with joints, muscles, or nerves.

It primarily targets joints that move poorly or incorrectly. Common complaints include problems with the spine (neck, back, pelvis), but also shoulder, hip, or jaw issues.

The goal is to restore mobility, reduce pain, and bring the body back into balance.

Who?

Manual therapy is suitable for anyone experiencing physical discomfort — whether you’re an athlete, recovering from surgery, or dealing with long-term pain or movement restrictions. It is a gentle and effective approach tailored to each individual’s needs.

It is especially helpful for people with neck and back pain, whether or not the pain radiates to other areas. Manual therapy can also relieve headaches and dizziness that originate from neck dysfunctions.

Other common indications include shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, or ankle complaints. Even jaw-related issues — such as clicking, pain while chewing, or teeth grinding — can be effectively treated through manual therapy.

How?

During a session, the manual therapist uses specific techniques such as:

  • Muscle and fascia techniques: aimed at reducing tension and improving circulation.
  • Mobilisations: gentle, repeated movements to improve joint mobility.
  • Manipulations: a quick, controlled movement of the joint — sometimes accompanied by a “crack” sound. This is usually painless and provides immediate relief.
